Costa Rica is very nice. It is more expensive then all other Central America countries, but it offers the comforts of home in most towns. Many gringos have moved here, opened businesses and made this their home. Costa Rica is very used to and welcomes tourists. We are still very careful, but Costa Rica feels a little safer then other countries we’ve been to. We feel safer to sleep in ungated areas. Also, the local population has a much more European look and much less the indigenous look most people share in the other Central American countries we have visited thus far. It is harder to tell the tourists apart from the locals in this country. It is really developed for tourism and the main roads are well signed. Most people speak at least some English. Scenery wise, it is pretty but not that much different from other places we’ve visited.
The border crossing was fairly easy. Leaving Nicaragua we paid $2/person exit fee and a $1/person municipal tax. Entry fees for Costa Rica consisted of a $15 manditory automobile seguro fee and $5 auto fumigation fee. We thought that the seguro was auto insurance for which we already had a policy. But I am not sure what the seguro actually is because it is different from just automobile insurance and there was no way around paying it. There were no other charges. As usual, we needed a couple copies of our licenses, passports, title and registration. In addition, we needed one copy of the seguro paper and the stamps received in our passports at the border. Each person who intends to drive in Costa Rica needs to make sure to put their names on the vehicle permit they will issue for each car.
